Jon Ruben pleaded guilty to 17 charges at the courthouse on Friday

A man who laced sweets with sleeping medication and provided them to youngsters at a summer program in the region has admitted sexual offences against two children both between nine and ten.

The accused was detained after eight youngsters and one adult experienced illness at the facility in the summer month.

The 76-year-old, from that region, pleaded guilty to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

Yet, he denied one particular crime he was accused of, which was against a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was remanded in custody prior to a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, described the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the children, the prosecutor explained, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to consume candy "rapidly".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the young males "over an extended period", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She stated the man had been capable of justifying this for many years as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had worries in recently.

The prosecutor added: "Recently" his stepson had worries about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to examine in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel explained items including infant oil, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his family member alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She said the man continued to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she continued.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

The prosecutor stated the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities again.

She stated Ruben then played the "treat game" in a room of five youngsters.
