New research reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
